Replacement Of Open Canal Using HDPE Pipe & Fittings

Surface water in India has become scarce due to Global Warming and dwindling rainfall pattern. Added to this, indiscriminate construction of housing and other infrastructure construction due to Industrialization of Urban and Rural areas has directly hit the effective ground water recharging and the ground water source has gone down deeper and deeper making it very costly as a water resource.

The available surface water from the rivers are stored in dams and let out by open canals for irrigation, drinking water supply and Industrial use near the river banks on either side. As the open canals are either earthen and or cement mortar lined and are susceptible to several water losses like evaporation, percolation and breakages of canal bunds either natural or manmade increases the losses of water in canal conveying system. The conveyance efficiency is up to 75% in canal system, where as in case of piped distribution network it is up to 95%.

The above wastages have been effectively stopped by conveying water with JAIN HDPE larger diameter pipes up to 2500mm OD in many parts of India and proved to be the best solution for the conservation of water which is the direct need of the hour today in India.

As the canal is replaced in to network of underground HDPE pipelines there is NO requirement of farm-land acquisition from marginal farmers for construction of open canals. That is why farmers are very happy and welcoming such canal replacement projects in India.

In Punjab (year 2016), more than 13 km length of Kandi canal (stage II) has been replaced using underground installed gravity HDPE pipes and fittings up to 1400mm outer diameter. The HDPE pipeline is designed with 0.60 m/sec velocity which maintains the gravity flow condition in the underground HDPE pipes.
